Product Categories

Overview

Product categories provide a hierarchical organization system for your product catalog in Mezan, helping you logically group related products for more efficient inventory management and reporting.

Category Structure

The product category system in Mezan consists of two levels of categories:

  1. Categories: Top-level groupings for broad product classifications. Examples: Electronics, Furniture, Services, Raw Materials. This level is required. Each product must be assigned to exactly one category.
  2. Subcategories: Second-level categorization nested under parent categories. Examples: Under Electronics: Phones, Computers, Accessories. Using this level is optional, and you can create products without subcategories.

Benefits of Categorization

Implementing a structured category system provides several advantages:

  1. Improved Organization: Logically arrange products for easier referencing and management
  2. Enhanced Filtering: Quickly find products by category search in product select in transaction forms
  3. Better Reporting: Generate category based reports and analytics

Fields of the Category Form Explained

  1. Parent Category: The parent category of the category. This is optional, if selected, the category will be a sub-category of the selected parent category.
  2. Name: The name of the category. This is required.
  3. Description: A brief description of the category. This is optional.

Categories can be edited but cannot be deleted if they are currently associated with any products in the organization, to preserve historical data integrity. This ensures that products previously assigned to categories maintain their categorization in reports and transaction history, and continue to have a category assigned to them.
